Welcome to September! Last month, I set the intention to live each day with J O Y, E A S E + L I G H T N E S S. I had a post-it note on my fridge that asked the question: Is there joy, ease and lightness in what I am doing? Each morning, I read this phrase and spent a brief moment realigning myself with my intention.
Overall, I moved through the month of August with these three words guiding me. There were a few minor hiccups, including a head cold. But, I was able to rise above these circumstances with the help of two things.
MEDITATION—This practice has become such a powerful part of my wellness journey. I’ve deemed an area of our study ‘my meditation space’ and go there to get out of my head and into my body. This sacred time is all about connecting with my Higher Power and listening to my intuition. I feel calmer, more harmonious and better balanced. It’s really that amazing!
TALKING IT OUT—Yes, I admit I am a typical woman. I like to talk! But, more important than ‘the verbal vomiting’, I seek out trusted confidants to express my thoughts and feelings to. These people know how to encourage me and help me get back on track. My husband, parents and bestie fall into this category, but a few weekends ago I had the most exhilarating conversation with a friend I hadn’t seen in a while that really soothed my soul. We walked along the beach for about 2 hours, pouring our hearts out to each other. I left feeling supported, loved and overall blissful!
If you are feeling frazzled or just ‘off’, I encourage you to undertake one or both of the above practices. Create some time to step away from the hustle and bustle to meditate. Seek out a friend who can support you by listening without judgement and offering wise advice. I know you’ll feel so much better afterward!
Now with a new month ahead of us, I want to share what I’m diggin’ this September. I think I’ve got you covered in a few key areas: Brains, Beauty and Body. Let’s get to it!
September Mariposa Must Haves
Radiant Lifestyle Program
This 8-week program was created by Kylie Anderson, personal trainer and wellness coach. Kylie and I recently met through the virtual world of blogging. I was drawn to Kylie’s energy and the bubbly, confident presence she exudes. Like me, she promotes holistic health and sustainable healthy living.
This health program is all about getting in touch with your body and working with it, not against it. No more pounding the pavement and depriving yourself of calories. Can I get an Amen? Kylie has tailored this program for women who want to feel free, confident and in love with themselves and life! She throws the word “diet” out the door and rather focuses on Intuitive Eating. (Which I am a total advocate for!)
In this program, Kylie is not only your cheerleader. She is your guide, supporting you with tips and tools throughout the entire process. This program is designed for both online or in-person clients in Victoria. If this is something that interests you, you can sign up here.
I am very excited and honored that Kylie has asked me to be a contributor for this one-of-a-kind program. If you sign up, you’ll get some insider experience, knowledge and tips from me. Stay tuned!

I recently went to a Health and Wellness forum in Perth. I spent the day listening to industry experts share their knowledge and experience in all things, well, health and wellness. In one particular seminar, my eyes were opened to the toxicity of well-known, commonly used personal care and beauty products. Your skin is your body’s largest organ. Did you know that your skin absorbs roughly 60% of what you put on it? If this is the case, we better be lathering it with beneficial, non-toxic stuff, right?
Well, I dare you to go grab your shampoo, body wash and lotion and read the ingredients labels. Can you even pronounce half those words? And, how many items are even listed there? It’s a lonngggg list, I bet! The scary thing is that a lot of these ingredients are toxic to our bodies. They contain cancer causing carcinogens and parabens.
Many popular drugstore deodorants contain parabens. In fact, a research study found that 18 out of 20 breast cancer tumors contained parabens. (Although they couldn’t directly conclude that the deodorant caused the tumors.)
I left the forum knowing that I wanted to make some swift changes in my beauty routine. The first thing to go was my aluminium containing deodorant. You can read more on the effects of aluminium in deodorants here. I searched my local farmers market for a natural alternative and am happy with my choice of FRESCA. It’s 100% natural and blended with essential oils. (Big bonus!) I feel so empowered taking this step towards preserving my health and being more conscious about what I put on my skin.
Bittersweet by Shauna Niequist
This book came at the most opportune time in my life. I had recently suffered a miscarriage and was covered by a dark cloud of grief. My sister-in-law handed me this book with the most heartfelt sentiment. I read the entire book on my transit from Nashville to Perth (and cried most of the way through). Shauna Niequist is a talented wordsmith who writes with such honesty and transparency that I felt she was taking the words right out of my mouth. I can’t say it any better so here’s a quote from her website that sums this lady’s writing style up so very well.
“Shauna writes about the beautiful and broken moments of everyday life–friendship, family, faith, food, marriage, love, babies, books, celebration, heartache, and all the other things that shape us, delight us, and reveal to us the heart of God.”
When I say, “this book is a must have,” I literally mean: THIS BOOK IS A MUST HAVE!!
I’ll end with a little gold nugget from the book.
Now is your time. Become, believe, try. Walk closely with people you love, and with other people who believe that God is good and life is a grand adventure. Don’t spend time with people who make you feel like less than you are. Don’t get stuck in the past, and don’t try to fast-forward yourself into the future you haven’t yet earned. Give today all the love and intensity and courage you can, and keep traveling honestly along life’s path.
Whether you want to snuggle up with a good book or dive head first into a health and wellness overhaul, my September Must Haves will hit the spot!
